Lecanto Invitational Local Preview

Local teams from Ocala will be toeing the line tomorrow at the 2013 Lecanto Invitational, hosted by Lecanto High School. For some this will be the first test they’ve had all season to race competitors from out side Marion County for others it will be a test to see how they’ve improved from week one.

On the women’s side look for the duo of Audrey Carpenter and Elizabeth Mulford to shine. Last year the pair went 1 – 2 (Mulford-Carpenter) beating some very good girls, including Belleview stud and now USF distance runner Catherine Blaney. Looking to close the gap between her and her teammates, look for Taelor Davis to be in the mix!

In addition to the great returning runners from VHS we will be able to get a glimpse of some of the very talented 9th graders. On Tuesday, Leigha Torino of NMHS won her first varsity race at Trinity Catholic. Her time was in the high 21’s placing her as the top frosh in the county. Looking to claim the 9th grade throne will be the 3 freshmen from Vanguard; Stephanie Hansen, Hannah Evans, and Lizzy Williams all of whom ran great races at the Bob Hans Invitational last weekend.

In the race for the top team in the county, Vanguard looks to be the overall favorites as they have the top 3 returning runners from last year’s conference meet and a stable of young talent.  Look for Belleview High School and Forest to battle it out for 2nd among Marion County teams as they both return fast girls in Keely Pisczek and Sabrina Yser.

On the guys side we can expect to see a little more competition individually. Last year’s county champion, David Rood of Vanguard, can expect to see challenges from Lake Weir’s Chandler Soucey, Belleview’s Redando Beauplan, and Trinity Catholic’s Ben Waller.

On the guys side it is hard to say whom the top freshmen are as this will be the first invite for many of the Marion County teams.

In the race for the top Marion County team at Lecanto, Vanguard again, is expected to be the overall favorites. VHS returns a lot of the top runners in the county and is currently one of the top teams in the state. We can again see Belleview and Forest go back and forth for the next best team in the county. Belleview returns 2 of the top returners in Beauplan and Fitzpatrick, while Forest has the ability to use their numbers to produce good runners.
